Build skills that survive pressure

Use one clear cue at a time, then test it with movement, decisions, and a defender.

01

Core skill

Ball handling

A good handle is controlled, useful, and connected to a decision—not a collection of tricks.

Four coaching cues

  • Sit into your hips instead of bending at the waist.
  • Push the ball into the floor with relaxed fingers.
  • Keep the off arm legal and ready to protect your space.
  • Change pace before you add another move.
02

Core skill

Shooting

Build range only after you can repeat your balance, alignment, release, and finish near the basket.

Four coaching cues

  • Start with feet organized and shoulders relaxed.
  • Keep the ball path simple and let the legs supply power.
  • Finish with the wrist relaxed and fingers toward the rim.
  • Hold the finish long enough to diagnose the miss.
03

Core skill

Passing

Passing rewards timing and accuracy. Deliver the ball where your teammate can use it immediately.

Four coaching cues

  • See the defender before choosing the pass.
  • Step toward the target without drifting off balance.
  • Pass away from the defender's reach.
  • Use a fake only when it moves the defense.
04

Core skill

Finishing

Footwork creates the angle. Touch and vision finish the play.

Four coaching cues

  • Arrive at the rim on balance.
  • Practice same-foot and opposite-foot takeoffs.
  • Use the backboard from useful angles.
  • Protect your landing space and avoid reckless contact.
05

Core skill

Defense and rebounding

Defense is positioning, effort, and communication repeated for the entire possession.

Four coaching cues

  • Stay square without crossing your feet on short slides.
  • Close out under control with high hands.
  • See your player and the ball.
  • Finish the stop by finding a body and securing the rebound.
06

Core skill

Basketball IQ

Smart play begins with spacing, quick recognition, and simple decisions made on time.

Four coaching cues

  • Create width and depth when you do not have the ball.
  • After a pass, cut, screen, or relocate with purpose.
  • Attack a closeout before the defense resets.
  • On defense, help early and recover with urgency.

Common mistake

Changing five things after one miss.

Use a short feedback loop: notice the result, name one likely cause, make one adjustment, then repeat enough times to see a pattern.
